Each year, NexT tries to bring to the audience’s attention a selection of short films from an European area and this edition’s chosen one is Greece. The Focus: Greece program brings forth, in a more or less discreet way, the wave of revolt mixed with lethargy felt by the country’s youth who don’t see themselves in the Ancient Greece and try to create a modern Greece of their own.
Hiwa depicts a poem in which a camera flies above a vast landscape up close, over the mountains, into the city, while Archipelagos, Naked Granites presents hhe everyday life of a country in crisis, the slowness of the revolution, the individual questions which challenge politics and the survival which clashes with ideals. In Sandy Beach, a woman takes her father for their usual Sunday swim and two high-school students seek their identity, testing each other’s boundaries in Prosefhi (Greek School Prayer). The six Greek Prime Ministers named in 1936 pass away within the year and Tina, the main character of National Garden attends the Halloween costume contest dressed as a Penguin only to lose the first prize to Princess Jasmine.
