În fața unei expoziții londoneze despre rezistența palestiniană, Leila (Nabila Zeitouni) îi pune prietenului său curator o întrebare foarte simplă: de ce în toate aceste imagini, care se întind pe atâtea zeci de ani, nu există nicio femeie? Răspunsul, extrem de nesatisfăcător pentru Leila, e că femeile pur și simplu n-au fost acolo.

Într-o încercare de a corecta această excludere sistematică a femeilor din istoria politică și istoria luptei pentru eliberare, ‘Leila and the Wolves’ (‘Leila wa al ziap’) e o călătorie de-a lungul deceniilor, de la începutul secolului al XX-lea și perioada Mandatului Britanic al Palestinei până în anul 1984, care ilustrează sacrificiile și implicarea femeilor libaneze și palestiniene în rezistență, precum și legăturile dintre cele două spații și popoare.

Filmul lui Heiny Srour – căreia acest mare și absolut răvășitor proiect i-a luat șase ani de filmare – e, în primul rând, o esențială păstrare în viață a memoriei colective și o recuperare a poveștilor uitate și ascunse ale femeilor din Liban și Palestina. Pe de cealaltă parte, el acționează și ca un document-mărturie a opresiunii – a Lupilor – care au ocupat, jefuit și destabilizat aceste state de-a lungul ultimului secol. Ce ar părea incredibil și exaltat de ficțiune (acolo unde incursiunea în timp presupune scenete cu aceiași actori interpretând personaje din alte decenii) e imediat autentificat de montajul de arhive la care apelează Srour: da, toate acestea s-au întâmplat, tocmai așa, tocmai atât de crud.

La 40 de ani de la apariția filmului, imaginile sale nu și-au pierdut nici cel mai mic gram de relevanță, căci asuprirea continuă, iar la fel de rezonantă rămâne și întrebarea cântecului de jale care deschide ‘Leila and the Wolves’: de ce vina nu e a lupului că atacă oile, ci a păstorului că nu există?

In front of a London exhibition on Palestinian resistance, Leila (Nabila Zeitouni) asks her curator friend a very simple question: why, in all these images spanning so many decades, is there not a single woman? The answer, highly unsatisfactory for Leila, is that women simply weren’t there.

In an attempt to correct this systematic exclusion of women from political history and the history of the liberation struggle, Leila and the Wolves (Leila wa al ziap) is a journey across decades, from the early 20th century and the British Mandate of Palestine until 1984. It illustrates the sacrifices and involvement of Lebanese and Palestinian women in the resistance, as well as the connections between the two regions and peoples.

Heiny Srour’s film – a monumental and absolutely heart-wrenching project that took her six years to film – is, first and foremost, an essential preservation of collective memory and a recovery of the forgotten and hidden stories of women from Lebanon and Palestine. On the other hand, it also serves as a testimonial document of oppression – of the Wolves – who have occupied, plundered, and destabilized these states throughout the last century. What might seem incredible and exaggerated fiction (where the time-travelling incursions involve scenes with the same actors playing characters from different decades) is immediately authenticated by the archival footage Srour uses: yes, all of this happened, exactly like this, exactly this cruel.

Forty years after the film’s release, its images have not lost the slightest bit of relevance, as the oppression continues, and the question posed by the lament that opens Leila and the Wolves remains just as resonant: why is the blame not on the wolf for attacking the sheep, but on the shepherd for not being there?
