Sinopsis:

Pe măsură ce războiul din Estul Ucrainei din 2014 făcea ravagii, un grup de asistenți sociali lucra neîncetat într-un centru de cazare temporară din apropierea frontului. Voiau să le creeze copiilor un spațiu sigur, în cele maximum nouă luni pe care le puteau petrece acolo, și să le ofere ulterior viitorul cel mai bun posibil – uneori acesta avea să fie familia, alteori un orfelinat.

Prin destinele a trei copii care se luptă cu necunoscutul viitorului, filmul reușește să spună povestea unei întregi generații, aceea a copiilor care-și pierd părinții „to war or to alcohol” și devin mult prea devreme adulți. Avem astfel o perspectivă inedită și intimă asupra unui subiect pe care toată lumea crede că îl cunoaște (războiul din Ucraina și urmările lui) și asupra unei realități pe care toată lumea crede că o înțelege (combinația de alcool, violență și sărăcie din țările din Est). E deznădejde în această realitate – fiecare copil care pleacă din centru e imediat înlocuit de un altul, cu o poveste aproape identică –, dar e și speranță și bucurie crudă – de exemplu, în jocul copiilor sau în reîntâlnirea cu o bunică ce-și asumă rolul de mamă și tată.

Synopsis:

As the 2014 war in Eastern Ukraine was wreaking havoc, a group of social workers were toiling away in a temporary accommodation centre near the front. They wanted to create a safe space for children in the maximum nine months they could spend there and to then offer them the best future possible – sometimes this would be a family and other times an orphanage. Through the destinies of three children who struggle against the uncertainty of the future, the film manages to tell the story of an entire generation, that of children who lose their parents to war or to alcohol and become adults much too early. We thus have a unprecedented and intimate perspective on a subject everyone thinks they know (the war in Ukraine and its consequences) and on a reality everyone thinks they understand (the combination of alcohol, violence, and poverty in Eastern countries.) There is despair in this reality – every child who leaves the centre is immediately replaced by another, with an almost identical story -, but there is also hope and raw joy – for instance, in the children’s play or in the reunion with a grandmother who assumes the role of both mother and father.
