This autumn, choreographer Vava Ștefănescu comes to Cluj with her new premiere, “...in Wonderland”, a work about the moment of reset in each of our lives, marking a new beginning in the artist’s prestigious career.
Drawing on the ideas of Carroll’s story, and much like Alice herself, the choreographer-performer invites audiences on a journey in which the self, memory, and reality undergo (ir)reversible transformations.
One author, 7 co-authors
Produced by PETEC and co-produced by the National Centre for Dance Bucharest, “...in Wonderland” offers audiences an unusual format: Vava Ștefănescu’s choreographic solo enters into a real-time dialogue with the presence of seven artists invited to join her on stage.
Andreea Belu, Carmen Coțofană, Alexandra Mihaela Dancs, Florin Fieroiu, Smaranda Găbudeanu, Mihaela Michailov, and Anamaria Pravicencu watch the performer’s dance and put it into words, each from their own perspective, creating a polyphony of voices. As different witnesses to the same body, the seven tell the story of that body and, through the act of speaking it, transform it.
“I invite the audience to reflect on their own losses, on how they have reorganised themselves internally after bereavement or a profound change. I offer up my (auto)biography, my body—a body that has danced extensively, that has lost and gained, and that now allows itself to be watched and ‘spoken’... It is an analogue performance, without screens, without artifice. And yes, in this life, each of us is, at some point, an Alice.”
