Two Wrongs proudly presents DJ Spanish Fly: The Godfather of Memphis Rap, with local support from Cuscrew and Desvalido.
DJ Spanish Fly, born Antonio D. Kimbrough, is a legendary figure in the music world, widely celebrated as the godfather of Memphis rap. His contributions to the genre not only shaped the unique sound of Memphis but also laid the groundwork for Southern hip-hop as a whole. Active since the mid-1980s, DJ Spanish Fly's innovative style bridged the gap between the party-centric DJ culture and the raw, streetwise storytelling that defines hip-hop.
Born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee, Jackson grew up immersed in a rich musical environment, influenced by the city’s soul, blues, and funk traditions. As a teenager, he began DJing at local parties and clubs, quickly gaining a reputation for his ability to create electric atmospheres with his mixtapes and live performances. These early gigs became the breeding ground for his experimental approach to music.
DJ Spanish Fly’s sound was groundbreaking. In an era dominated by the East and West Coast hip-hop scenes, he crafted a distinctive Southern style characterised by heavy bass, hypnotic drum machines, and eerie melodies. He incorporated funk and blues samples that resonated with Memphis’ cultural roots, but his early use of the Roland TR-808 drum machine and vocal manipulation defined his sound. Tracks like “Get Buck” and “Gangsta Walk” became underground anthems, embedding themselves in Memphis’ street culture.
Fly's lyrics and beats spoke to the realities of life in Memphis, from gritty depictions of urban struggles to celebratory tracks about club life and street dancing. His DIY approach to producing and distributing music—often through cassette tapes passed around locally—helped democratize hip-hop production in the South.
While DJ Spanish Fly’s contributions were initially celebrated in underground circles, the broader hip-hop community has increasingly recognised his influence. His legacy lives on through the music of countless artists he inspired and the thriving Memphis rap scene that still carries his fingerprints.
