The International Competition collects films with diverse styles and themes, leading its audience through many moods or far-off corners of the world... and maybe even beyond that. The selected short films are essay films, musicals, comedies or unique formal experiments, coming from all around Europe, but also from countries like Singapore, Mozambique, India or Vietnam.
Camouflage is an animation inspired by Ottoman Miniatures and Hieronymus Bosch, which tells the story of a forbidden friendship blossoming in a secret garden in the city where the East meets the West. In High Cities of Bone, Karlon, born in Pedreira dos Húngaros (a slum in the outskirts of Lisbon) and a pioneer of Cape Verdean Creole rap, runs away from the housing project to which he had been relocated and in Fox, Stephanos is left alone to take care of his two younger siblings and their family dog among pizza boxes, adolescent flirt and a phone that stays unanswered. The Boy in the Ocean discovers the first sexual desires with a girl on land when trapped on a boat with his parents who still treat him like a child, while five friends are preparing for a night of fun in a warm Saturday night in The Disco Shines. In Family Trip, the anniversary of a young father’s son and the promise he made to his family are threatened by the rush against time through the overcrowded city as other people depend on his work.
