On Thursday, December 5, Loefah, one of the pioneering founders of dubstep is headlining the night in Room 1. One third of the legendary DMZ crew and current head of the infamous Swamp81 label, Loefah has been revolutionizing the bass-heavy sound of South London time and time again over the past decades.
Originally from Croydon, UK, Peter Livingston shaped dubstep with groundbreaking releases on DEEP MEDi and Digital Mystikz, which he ran together with Mala and Coki. His knack for dark basslines and eerie vocal samples helped pave the way for the genre to break into mainstream as part of Mary Anne Hobbs' Dubstep Warz radio show.
However, Loefah’s passion for dubstep waned around 2007. In 2009, he branched out and launched Swamp 81 – a label that began by releasing work from artists such as Kryptic Minds and Skream. Many absolute classics were released under it – from Joy Orbison’s Sicko Cell to Addison Groove’s Footcrab, as it spread out to cover a wider spectrum of Bass music. To check for the latest future-forward sounds for dance he is leaning to, check out the regular Swamp 81 show on Rinse FM.
