Operation Monster

Films that criticized the Ceaușescu regime were very rare during the years it was in power. Lucian Pintilie's The Reenactment (Reconstituirea) is among the few that dared to expose the system openly, presenting an absurd story about the way authorities operated in the late 1960s. However, in 1976, director Manole Marcus, screenwriter Titus Popovici, and the great actor Toma Caragiu joined forces to create one of the most famous fishing stories in Romanian cinema.

In Operation Monster (Operațiunea Monstrul), a group of five co-workers and Party members set out on an expedition to the Danube Delta in search of a fish known only from stories and legends: a gigantic catfish coveted by many fishermen, yet never successfully caught. The challenge they face is not merely catching the fish itself, but dealing with a more delicate question: what happens if someone other than the boss is the one who catches it?

The film’s political subtext is concealed beneath beautiful landscapes, hilarious and memorable moments arising from the interactions among the five men, and an absurd comedy layered over a political satire that was highly relevant to its time.
