QUARTETONE

“Quartetone” is a project exploring the sounds of Levantine & classical Arabic tunes in the context of Jazz where the “quarter tones” of the classical flute would blend with the trumpet, piano and percussion to create a modern sound though preserving a touch of authenticity. 

While jazz improvisation follows chord changes and progressions, the levantine/arabic taqsim follows melodic progressions based on a maqam (melodic mode) where the performer is free to move within it or even modulate to other maqams as long as they return to the original.
