In his unclassifiable film, Dusan Makavejev edits footage of the first Serbian talkie, melodrama Innocence Unprotected, made during the Nazi occupation, and contemporary interviews with the man who made it. This is Dragoljub Aleksic, an acrobat, locksmith, and Houdini-style escape artist whose story the director uses as a basis to explore his country’s tumultuous recent history.
