„Întoarcere la Reims” pășește pe frontul fierbinte deschis de arhivele muncitorești ale ultimului secol în Franța, începând cu momentul în care acestea, grație progresului tehnic, au devenit filmabile, și încheind chiar în buza actualității. Filmul adaptează lax pătrunzătorul eseu sociologic al filosofului Didier Eribon, bestseller în mai multe țări europene, în care acesta își pune sub lupă devenirea homosexuală în interiorul mediului muncitoresc familial. Coroborând această mărturie personală cu urmele audiovizuale ale trecutului popular, Jean-Gabriel Périot („O tinerețe germană”) îmbrățișează, printr-un ambițios gest de cineast-arheolog, rezistența proletară din timpul celui de-Al Doilea Război Mondial și revoltele din Mai 68, noile cartiere de locuințe sociale și recenta mișcare a Vestelor Galbene. O contra-istorie ia astfel naștere, animată de vocea cunoscutei actrițe Adèle Haenel, în care marginalii și deposedații narațiunii oficiale a capitalismului triumfal sunt chemați la rampă, în numele unei flăcări juste pe care au știut s-o întrețină prin luptă și perseverență. “Returning to Reims” steps on the hot front opened by the French proletarian archives of the last century, starting with the moment when, thanks to technical progress, they have become filmable, and ending at the edge of the present. The movie is a lax adaptation of philosopher Didier Eribon’s penetrating sociological essay, a bestseller in several European countries, where he examines his process of becoming a homosexual within the working-class family environment. Corroborating this personal testimony with the audiovisual traces of the popular past, Jean-Gabriel Périot (“A German Youth”) embraces, through an ambitious filmmaker-archaeologist’s gesture, the proletarian resistance during World War II and the May 68 revolts, the new social housing neighbourhoods, and the recent Yellow Vests movement. A counter-history thus takes shape, animated by renowned actress Adèle Haenel’s voice, where the marginalized and the dispossessed of the official narrative of triumphant capitalism take a curtain call, in the name of a just ideal they knew how to keep alive through struggle and perseverance. Născut în Franța în 1974, Jean-Gabriel Périot a realizat mai multe scurtmetraje aflate la granița dintre documentar, film experimental și ficțiune. Și-a dezvoltat propriul stil de montaj care explorează teme precum violența și istoria utilizând arhive fotografice. Périot a câștigat numeroase premii în cadrul unor festivaluri de film prestigioase. De asemenea, debutul său în lungmetraj, ”A German Youth”, a fost prezentat în deschiderea secțiunii Panorama la Festivalul Internațional de Film de la Berlin, în 2015.

Born in France in 1974, Jean-Gabriel Périot has made several short films on the frontier of documentary, experimental, and fiction. He developed his own style of film editing that explores violence and history using film and photography archives. Périot won numerous awards at various prestigious film festivals. In addition, his first feature, ”A German Youth,” opened the Panorama section of the 2015 Berlinale.
