Undeva în Belgradul contemporan a trăit una din puținele mărturii vii ale câtorva dintre atrocitățile care au zguduit din țâțâni secolul XX. Aflată printre primele femei care au umplut rândurile partizanilor sârbi în lupta anti-fascistă, Sonja apare în film ca o prezență candidă, iar firul amintirii o duce înapoi în timp în vremea unei copilării burgheze lipsite de griji, urmată de avântul revoluționar al adolescenței, rezistența anti-germană, torturile și experiența Auschwitz-ului din tinerețe. Povestea ei depășește atât perimetrul apartamentului ordonat, cât și granițele istoriei de manual, ducându-ne direct în mijlocul peisajelor care au văzut pe viu marea crimă a războiului, acum niște tablouri reci și goale, încremenite în uitare. Imaginile fuzionează unele în altele, amintindu-ne că, la rândul ei, memoria torturii și a suferințelor fuzionează în spectacolul mare al istoriei, fiind inscripționată direct în carnea timpului. Lecția despre peisaj din filmul Martei Popivoda pare să reveleze mai mult decât simple banalități legate de compoziție și cromatică: poate că macii vor păli în soarele arzător al verii, dar pământul din lagăre n-o să se spele niciodată de sânge. Somewhere in contemporary Belgrade resides one of the few living testimonies of the atrocities which shook the 20th century to its core. One of the first Serbian women to become an anti-fascist partisan, Sonia emerges in the movie as a candid figure and memory lane carries her back in time to a carefree bourgeois childhood, followed by the revolutionary zest of the teenage years, the anti-German resistance, the tortures, and Auschwitz in her youth. Her story transcends the perimeter of her tidy apartment, as well as that of textbook history, as it leads us straight into the midst of the landscapes that witnessed the great murder which was the war. The images fuse together, reminding us that, in its turn, the memory of torture and suffering fuses into the grand show of history, engraved in the very fabric of time. And the lesson on landscape in Marta Popivoda’s film seems to reveal more than mere banalities about composition and chromatics: poppies may fade in the blazing sun, but the earth in the concentration camps will never be washed off of blood. Marta Popivoda este cineastă, artistă video și cercetătoare. Opera sa explorează tensiunile dintre memorie și istorie, corpuri colective și individuale, precum și cele dintre ideologie și viață cotidiană, acordând o atenție deosebită potențialităților antifasciste și feministe ale proiectului socialist iugoslav. Lucrările lui Popivoda au fost prezentate în cadrul mai multor festivaluri de film importante, precum și în mari galerii de artă precum Tate Modern Londra, MoMA New York, M HKA Antwerp și Muzeul de Artă Modernă Ljubljana. De asemenea, a primit prestigiosul premiu Berlin Art Prize oferit de Academia de Arte din Berlin și premiul Edith-Russ-Haus (Emerging Media Artist).

Marta Popivoda is a filmmaker, video-artist, and researcher. Her oeuvre explores the tensions between memory and history, collective and individual bodies, as well as ideology and everyday life, with a focus on antifascist and feminist potentialities of the Yugoslav socialist project. Popivoda’s works have been presented at various important film festivals, as well as in major art galleries, such as Tate Modern London, MoMA New York, M HKA Antwerp, and Museum of Modern Art Ljubljana. Moreover, she received the prestigious Berlin Art Prize offered by the Akademie der Künste Berlin and the Edith-Russ-Haus Award (Emerging Media Artist.)
